Overview
Prison Island, also known as Changuu Island, is a stunning coral-rimmed islet just 5.6 km (3.5 miles) northwest of Stone Town, Zanzibar. This half-day excursion offers travelers a mix of history, wildlife encounters, and relaxation on sandy beaches. Originally intended as a prison for rebellious slaves, Changuu Island later served as a quarantine station. Today, it is a renowned tourist attraction, famous for its giant Aldabra tortoises, historic prison ruins, and clear turquoise waters ideal for snorkeling.

HALF DAY TRIP ITINERARY
9:00 AM - Departure from Stone Town Board a traditional dhow or motorboat for the short, scenic ride from Stone Town to Changuu Island. Enjoy views of the Indian Ocean and Stone Town's historic skyline.
VISIT GIANT TORTOISES Arrival at Prison Island
Begin with a historical tour of the prison ruins. Learn about the island's original purpose and its evolution over time. Explore the grounds and remnants of the structures built during the 19th century. Head to the sanctuary to meet the island's famous Aldabra giant tortoises, some of which are over 100 years old. Get up close with the tortoises, learn about conservation efforts, and take memorable photos. Gear up for a snorkeling session near the island’s coral reefs. Discover the vibrant marine life, including tropical fish, colorful corals, and other underwater wonders.
BEACH RELAXATION Beach Relaxation
Relax on the beautiful sandy beach, sunbathe, or take a swim in the warm, clear waters. Refreshments will be available on the beach. 1:30 PM - Return to Stone Town Depart from Changuu Island and enjoy a peaceful boat ride back to Stone Town.
